REVIEW USDr. Johnson has been performing vein procedures for over 20 years, and he has helped over 5,000 patients take control of their veins. He grew up in Florida and South Carolina, and attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his general surgery residency and was named Chief Resident in Surgery at the University of Florida.
He then completed a fellowship at Duke University specializing in minimally invasive surgery techniques. He moved to Atlanta and joined the Vein Center at Johns Creek in 2006. He serves as director of the Vein Center at Johns Creek, a post he has held since 2008. Dr. Johnson is certified through the National Board of Medical Examiners, and is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Dr. Johnson has taught courses on the latest techniques in the minimally invasive care of venous diseases. This has included teaching surgeons on a variety of standard procedural techniques, as well as updating surgeons on cutting-edge technologies. His interests include the treatment of venous reflux disease, minimally invasive surgery, and weight loss surgery. Dr. Johnson has served numerous hospital roles, including Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. He has also served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chief of General Surgery at Emory Johns Creek. He serves as Medical Director at the Atlanta General and Bariatric Surgery Center (AGBSC).

Dr. William H. Johnson, MD, FACS, is a highly respected surgeon with over 20 years of experience specializing in bariatric surgery, advanced laparoscopy, and the treatment of venous diseases. Having performed more than 3,500 weight-loss procedures and helped over 5,000 patients with vein treatments, Dr. Johnson is recognized as a leader in his field.
Born and raised in Florida and South Carolina, Dr. Johnson completed his medical education at the Medical University of South Carolina. He then pursued a general surgery residency at the University of Florida, where he was named Chief Resident. Following this, he completed a fellowship in Bariatric Surgery and advanced laparoscopy at Duke University, where he also served on the staff at Duke University Hospital.
In 2006, Dr. Johnson relocated to Atlanta, joining Atlanta Bariatrics and the Vein Center at Johns Creek. He has played a pivotal role in establishing and leading several successful programs, including serving as the Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery program at Northside Forsyth Hospital, where he helped earn the Center of Excellence designation. He also serves as the Medical Director at the Atlanta General and Bariatric Surgery Center (AGBSC) and the Vein Center at Johns Creek.
Dr. Johnson is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and holds certification from the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and has been recognized as one of America’s Top Surgeons by the Consumers Research Council of America. His professional affiliations include membership in the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the American Medical Association.
An innovator in his field, Dr. Johnson was the first in his area to use single-incision surgery for various procedures, including gallbladder and appendix removal and bariatric surgeries such as Lap Band placement and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. He is also a recognized expert in minimally invasive vein treatments, including the management of venous reflux disease.
Dr. Johnson is deeply committed to education and has taught numerous courses on minimally invasive surgery techniques, keeping surgeons updated on the latest advancements in the field. His research has been widely published, and he has presented his work at national medical and surgical conferences.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Johnson has held several leadership roles, including Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Chief of General Surgery. His contributions have significantly impacted patient care and surgical practices in the Atlanta area and beyond.
